ADOLESCENT PARENT DAY INVITATION
Please join us for APIN’s Annual Adolescent Parent Day (APD)
Presentation: Through storytelling, sharing lived experience, as well as drawing from mainstream education, this presentation will illustrate the importance of healthy relationships as parents navigate their role raising resilient children equipped for today’s challenges. In urban environments relationships are precious, most neighbourhoods have their own resources and parent spaces often tied to either schools or community centers. Creating a safe, healthy home for those around us hinges on our ability to communicate and relate with our environment and those we welcome into our family circle. This presentation will empower you to assert your parental authority and reflect for your children how to respect those around us.
Presenter: Ko’ona Saber is an Anishinaabe-kwe member of the Bizhiw doodem (Lynx Clan) from Peguis First Nation. She had until 2017 resided in the North End of Winnipeg for thirteen years, where she continues to work strengthening and supporting primarily indigenous families and children, travelling from Peguis. She empowers others through health promotion, advocating for indigenous voices, community development in addition to providing cultural programs and supportive services. Ko’ona has been sharing her Indigenous teachings for over thirty years, through Traditional Family Parenting education and hand drumming.
APD Schedule: The day starts at 9:15am with a light breakfast. Ko’ona is scheduled to present from 10:00-11:45, with a brief break at midpoint. Lunch will be served at 12:00pm. Please bring formula or lunch for your children as this will not be provided. Also, Norwood Hotel has a limited number of high chairs. Please ask parents to bring a stroller or booster seat for their baby. At 1:00pm, there will be 3 breakout sessions – Library Services, drumming and songs with Aj’a, and a photobooth. Participants will rotate between the 3 sessions.
Participants staying until the end of the day will receive a gift bag, filled with goodies.
