ADOLESCENT PARENT DAY INVITATION

9:15am to 2:30pm
Norwood Hotel
112 Marion Street
Please join us for APIN’s Annual Adolescent Parent Day (APD)
This year at APD, APIN is pleased to have Aj’a presenting Drumming is Medicine
Presentation: This presentation will involve sharing and learning drum teachings
and songs. As Indigenous people of Turtle Island, we use our traditional drums as
a way to connect with spirit. The traditional drum provides opportunity for
healing as well as connecting with our ancestors. Learn how the drum can help us
on our journey to live mino bimaadiziwin, the good life.
Presenter: My name is Aj’a. I am Anishinaabe on my mom’s side and on my dad’s
side I am Red River Métis. I am a mother and a Helper. I walk with my Anishinaabe
name that was passed on to me by my kukom from 4 generations before me. My
kukoms on both sides were medicine women. I walk with different teachings that
have been passed down from my family and other people I’ve connected with on
my journey. I carry those teachings in my bundle, my spirit, my blood and my
bones. I am truly grateful for this way of life.
As you may know I lived at Villa Rosa over 24 years ago as a young mother. I was
17 when moved there and began my motherhood journey. I also went to school
at APC when I had my daughter. I share this part of my story with you so you
know when I come and join your circles, I come with experiential knowledge. I
understand what’s it’s like to be a teenage mother and to reach out for supports
in my community. I am grateful for Villa Rosa and APC for the guidance and
kindness they’ve showed on my journey. Meegwetch for inviting me to share
teachings at the Adolescent Parent Day, I am honored.
APD Schedule: The day starts at 9:15am with a light breakfast. Career Trek will be
presenting from 10:00-10:30, followed by Aj’a’s Drumming is Medicine
presentation from 10:45-11:45. Lunch will be served at 12:00pm. Please bring
