FEBRUARY IS I LOVE TO READ MONTH!

Sharing books and stories with children builds a special connection and helps them develop a sense of belonging and community. As we celebrate I Love to Read Month, Bookmates encourages parents and other caregivers to share their favourite stories and discover new favourites together. Here are some things to think about when choosing books to read with your child(ren):

Infants:
 Board books for chewing with simple pictures
 Picture, rhyme and story books
 Black and white picture books (the contrast between dark and light allows them to focus their eyes on the pictures)
 Books with faces of children and family

Toddlers:
 Concept books about shapes, colours, animals, numbers or letters
 Short picture and story books with clear pictures
 Sturdy board books that they can carry and allow for playing
 Interactive books (lift the flap, touch and feel etc)

Preschoolers:
 Predictable books that have patterns that repeat. Children can “read” the story through memorizing
 Longer picture and story books as your child increases her attention span
 Stories based on life-like adventures
 Wordless books that encourage children to tell their own stories

The number one rule as it relates to reading with your children is to have fun. Creating positive experiences around books and reading is the goal in the early years. So snuggle up together and read this February!

Bookmates is a not for profit organization. We develop, deliver and offer training in a variety early literacy programs and workshops to enhance the learning of both children and adults. We support parents and caregivers in their roles as their children’s first teachers, and help prepare children for success as they enter the school years. Our programs are ideal for use in schools, child care and family resource centres, libraries and other organizations that work to support families with young children.
